Suspension of disbelief
by Anthony Glassman
Cleveland-Artist Thomas Grafton Lee, who graduated from Cleveland State University last year, is highlighted in Suspended, a Window to Sculpture Emerging Artist Exhibition at the Sculpture Center in Cleveland.
Using found objects like chairs and beds, openly gay artist Lee creates solid artwork with an air of fragility to make statements on social, emotional and political issues.
Ann Albano, the executive director of the Sculpture Center, points to two 2006 pieces by Lee, "Suspended Dreams" and "If I Could, I Would, I'll Try," as examples of the artist's
oeuvre.
"Suspended Dreams" involves a double bed hanging in mid-air, suspended by sewing thread. The bed reacts to slight changes in air current, reflecting its precariousness.
"The installation speaks directly to the
loss of opportunities
and the impossible achieve-
Ann Albano
ment of personal dreams," she writes, "while, at the same time, calls into question such sculptural concerns as materiality, weightiness, substance, and the beauty of form and surface."
The other piece consisted of a large stack
of chairs perched atop a single chair. "Growing something improbable out of the refuse in the streets, I created 'If I Could, I Would, I'll Try' in the spirit of overcoming abandonment," Lee notes.
Thomas Grafton Lee's Suspended opens on April 27 with a public reception from 5 to 8 pm and an informal artist's talk at 6:30 pm. The exhibition runs through May 26.
